HISTORY
CAL
U-RENT HISTORY: Cal U-Rent was started as a California
corporation under the name, Cal U-Rent, Inc. in May of 1976.
Ownership was shared between Russ Goodenough of Fillmore,
California & Tom Carolan of Camarillo, California. The
first Cal U-Rent facility is still operating and located at
661 East Thousand Oaks Boulevard in the city of Thousand Oaks,
California. Doors were first opened for business at the Boulevard
location, purchased from Dougs U-Rent, on July 14, 1976.
In 1980, Cal U-Rent purchased
A-Z Rental located in the Montalvo area of Ventura, California
& established Cal U-Rent of Ventura. In 1985, we purchased
the real property located at the former A-Z Rental site, 2452
Alameda Avenue, Ventura as well as another property located
across the street at 5970 Seahawk Street. In 1987, Cal U-Rent
expanded its facility to include the Seahawk location. In
1988, Russ Goodenough purchased the shares of Tom Carolan
and now is the exclusive owner of Cal U-Rent.
In the latter part of the 1980s,
a subsidiary corporation called Proex, Inc. was established.
Proex ran a propane bottle exchange delivery route in the
Ventura and Ojai areas. That company was sold for a small
profit in 1990.
In 1990 Cal U-Rent, with IRS
approval, reorganized itself into four separate & independent
corporations: Cal U-Rent of Thousand Oaks, Inc.; Cal U-Rent
of Ventura, Inc.; Cal U-Rent Properties, Inc. & California
U-Rent Inc. Additionally, we created an affiliated corporation
named Cal Party Rent of Conejo Valley, Inc. Cal Party Rent
established a separate location in the 300 block of Thousand
Oaks Boulevard.
The severe recession, that lasted
from 1990 through 1995 in California, forced the company to
move its Business Office back to Thousand Oaks from
Ventura and to close the separate Cal Party Rent facility
in December of 1992. The Ventura facility was also closed
in July of 1993. The corporate entities of California U-Rent,
Inc., Cal U-Rent of Ventura, Inc. and Cal Party Rent of Conejo
Valley, Inc. were all terminated in the mid 1990s.
CONEJO
COASTAL PROPERTIES is a totally separate entity. Cal U-Rent
leases an auxiliary storage yard from Conejo Coastal Properties,
but is not affiliated in any other way other than several
cooperative advertising programs and business office services
contracted for by Conejo Coastal Properties. Conejo Coastal
Properties is in the business of leasing real property. The
Seahawk & Alameda real properties were transferred to
Conejo Coastal Properties in the IRS approved transfer in
1990. In 2001, it sold its Seahawk Property in a tax-free
exchange for a property located on Clay Court in Thousand
Oaks. Presently, Conejo Coastal Properties has commercial
and residential leases on its properties located in
Ventura and Thousand Oaks.
