Servicing & Maintenance

With the exception of some automatic transmission work, tire mounting and some body and paintwork, all servicing and maintenance on all Cal U-Rent equipment and trucks is performed at the Thousand Oaks facility. Other than servicing Terex Equipment, no other repair, maintenance or servicing of non-company owned equipment or trucks is performed.

COUNTER SCHEDULING BOARD: The acting Facility Manager controls servicing and maintenance. The truck & equipment scheduling board located behind the customer counter in the Office is the control mechanism. A meeting of the Manager is held each morning at the Scheduling Board to assign repair priorities. Additional meetings are held during the day as needed with individual mechanics. Assigned tasks include repair, bodywork, and fabrication. During the day, priority changes are discussed for any repair that needs to be made with reservations and equipment needs in mind. The Red Tags indicating a unit is downed, when it was downed and why it was downed are brought to the Facility Manager for listing on the Scheduling Board and assignment for repair to the appropriate shop.

FACILITIES: Servicing of equipment is either accomplished at the units designated parking stall in the yard or in one of three maintenance areas:

SMALL ENGINES SHOP: A Small Engines Shop is used for maintenance and servicing on all small engines equipment. It also houses parts and supplies for all small engine assigned units. The upstairs is a storage area for parts, rental contracts & propane tanks that are for sale. Downstairs houses spare parts, supplies that include drive belts & filters. Records of unit repair and periodic servicing are located here by category.

LARGE ENGINES SHOP: The Large Engines Shop has two repair bays. The maintenance library and unit record files are housed in the Shop Office. Each numbered piece of equipment has its’ own separate file. All welding is done in this shop area. Also an engine hoist is located here. A Plexiglas periodic maintenance (PM) board allows mechanics to quickly identify units in need of servicing.

MAINTENANCE LUBE BAY: The lube bay has one equipment repair bay. Additionally, hose fabrication work can be performed here. Hazardous waste storage of used oil filters & waste oil is located here as well as: the battery charging bay, the facility air compressor, parts cleaning units, paint and decal storage, and automatic dispensers of motor oil, hydraulic fluid, hydraulic oil & gear oil. The air compressor supplies air to: The Tool Center, The Small Engines Shop, The Cal Party Rent Storage Area, The Lube Bay, and the Large Engines Shop.

MOBILE FUELING:

FUELING TRAILER: A trailer is equipped with two 110-gallon fuel tanks. These tanks are filled with unleaded and off-road diesel fuel. The fuel tanks of both the Fueling Trailer and the Fueling Truck are equipped with battery-powered pumps with quantity gauges.

FUELING TRUCK:
The Service Truck is equipped with an air compressor and two 110-gallon fuel tanks. These tanks are filled with unleaded and on-road fuel. On-Road refers to fuel for trucks that use the highways and are thus subject to an excise tax. Off-Road refers to fuel used for construction related equipment.

SERVICING:

REGULAR SERVICING: Regular servicing of equipment is done on a continual basis by our Customer Service Representatives who work as yardmen. Through a “tag system”, as soon as an item of equipment returns from rental, it is quickly inspected, washed, tagged, fueled, serviced and inspected for safety and operational considerations. If there is maintenance to be performed, the unit is taken off rental and a Red Tag is placed on it, the maintenance staff is notified and the Counter Scheduling Control Board is marked with the unit being downed for maintenance.

TEREX EQUIPMENT SERVICING & MAINTENANCE: Terex equipment is serviced and maintained at our Thousand Oaks facility.

PERIODIC SERVICING: The Small Engines Shop performs periodic servicing of the smaller equipment to insure that they are in a good state of operational readiness & repair. Periodic maintenance is performed on all units assigned to Small Engines control, which are the units that do not have four digit unit numbers assigned. The Large Engines controls the trucks, trailers, and the larger construction related equipment, which are the units assigned four digit unit numbers.

SERVICE CALLS: The Large Engines Shop is usually manned seven days a week. Should a customer call with any equipment or truck problem, we are able to quickly dispatch a mechanic to evaluate, and if possible, repair the problem on-site.

FABRICATION & BODY REPAIR: Cal U-Rent performs welding repair and fabrication to strengthen units. We have designed and fabricated our Universal Trailer, which is provided free for small equipment transport by our customers. The Uni Trailers can haul a load of 1000#s net and all small equipment up to and including a walk-behind trencher. Depending on the type & extent of the damage, body, paint and decal work is either done in-house or assigned to a local body repair house. Cal U-Rent is contracted with a body and paint company in Los Angeles for wholesale body and paintwork.

MAINTENANCE:

REGULAR MAINTENANCE: Regular maintenance is done on an as-needed basis and is usually all done in-house. All repair work of one-hour duration or longer is recorded with a work order. Any outside invoices for parts or labor is included in the individual unit files. All work orders and PM forms are also included in a chronological record.

TRAILER MAINTENANCE: Almost all units are equipped with “bearing buddies” for automatic greasing of the wheel bearing. Lights are checked with each rental and the Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) in the Yard do the maintenance checks.

TIRE MAINTENANCE: Tire maintenance on all trailers, trucks and towed equipment is performed on a continual basis by the Yard Staff. After each rental, and during periodic yard checks, tires are checked for cuts, damage, wear and wear patterns. Big Brand Tire, located next door to Cal U-Rent, usually accomplishes repair and mounting.

PERIODIC MAINTENANCE (PM): Preventive (periodic) Maintenance (PM) is performed on all trucks and equipment. The trucks are checked every three, six and nine thousand miles. Each check has certain specific items to check or service. The six thousand mile check is more extensive than the three and the nine is more extensive than the six. All checks are performed using Cal U-Rent PM forms. Non-truck items are controlled by an A, B & C check system.
A Plexiglas Preventive Maintenance Board is located in the Large Engines Office and allows a visual control. This control board details the dates, miles and hours needed for all future checks on all numbered pieces of equipment.
